Day of Caring 2014

Coming up in September is our annual Day of Caring event, when hundreds of volunteers will be out in the Williamson County community, making it an (even) better place. "We are fortunate to have so many groups that want to participate that it's not just one Day of Caring -- it's a three-day event," said Debby Rainey, volunteer engagement manager for United Way of Williamson County. Local companies may sign up for projects Thursday and Friday, September 11 and 12. New this year is a partnership with the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which will send volunteers out into the community Saturday, September 13.

One family's story

Raise Your Hand!

Do you have an hour once a week to help 3rd and 4th graders with reading and math? You can make a difference in students' lives by helping them achieve proficiency in these classes at a pivotal point in their education. Students who reach this important milestone are well-prepared for the remaining years of school and beyond.

Third graders not reading at grade level equivalency after they leave the grade are:

25% more likely to drop out of school;

40% more likely to become teen parents;

50% more likely to be placed in special education;

60% more likely to never attend college;

70% more likely to be arrested for a violent crime.

United Way of Williamson County's Raise Your Hand program has been very successful, with an average of 93% of participating students achieving proficiency by the end of the school year. Raise Your Hand Williamson is expanding to include four additional schools this year, and the Tennessee School Boards Association supports a state-wide roll-out of Raise Your Hand by United Ways of Tennessee. Read more about this exciting statewide partnership on pages 26-27 here.
