A Backpack Roundup for The Big Payback
On May 2, The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee hosted The Big Payback, a community-wide, online day of giving. The charitable event helps area nonprofits raise much-needed dollars and bring awareness to pressing needs in our community— such as the rise of back-to-school expenses. #BigPayback
The Big Payback has made a tremendous impact among the regional nonprofit landscape. In the past five years, The Big Payback has raised more than $12.5 million for over 1,000 local nonprofits. Participating organizations have received gifts from 24,716 new donors they may have not otherwise reached.
United Way appreciates the community’s support with our back-to-school initiative. We utilized The BigPayback for a “Backpack Roundup,” which allowed our supporters and the community-at-large to supply free backpacks for K-12 students. And thanks to their generosity, we are jumpstarting the school supply drive with nearly 200 backpacks!
Back-to-school costs can be challenging for low-to-moderate income families. According to Deloitte’s 2018 Back-to-School Survey, average back-to-school spending across southern states is $488 per household, which includes the cost of supplies, clothing, and technology. The Backpack Roundup and school supply drive helps local families ease the financial burden of returning to school.
This summer, volunteers will fill all the backpacks with school supplies collected during our annual Stuff the Bus donation drive. Backpacks will be distributed to Williamson County students in August during our Backpack Giveaway events. Last year— thanks individuals, group, and workplace donations— we provided more than $136,000 worth of essential school supplies and backpacks to 2,480 K–12 students.
Our back-to-school initiative aims to accelerate education by ensuring that students do not have to worry about whether they have adequate school supplies when entering the new school year. Instead, kids can focus on learning and the start of a successful semester.
